My mother is getting to the point in an elderly person’s life when some seemingly simple tasks take on a Herculean level of difficulty and bother. It’s a bit funny, really. She doesn’t drive anymore, but she still gets dressed up for church each week and faithfully attends her Audubon Society meetings. Still, it’s up to me and my other siblings who still live in the area to take care of chores around her house.
She likes to keep her home furnished with plenty of potted plants, as they offset the white walls and make the house feel more inviting. Unfortunately, the task of pruning and picking up dead leaves from the floor often falls to me. That’s when I struck upon an ingenious plan: I would buy her a few silk ficus trees. Cleaning silk plants is a snap – there’s no trimming or bending down required.
